How to Choose a Free QR Code Generator Without Expiring Links
Compare free QR code options by static links, downloads, logos, and account requirements. Check the encoded URL before committing to a print run.
The best free QR code generator depends on the job: sharing a page, printing a branded sign, or managing an editable campaign. This guide is published by Pick QR Code and includes our own tool alongside three alternatives. It compares documented features checked on October 7, 2026.
Check what the QR code actually contains
A static code keeps the same encoded data. A dynamic website code typically contains a redirect address whose destination can be changed by a service. Bitly documents this relationship between its QR codes and short links. Editing and scan reporting can be useful; they also make the redirect service part of the journey.
- Make one sample with the exact link you plan to print.
- Use a scanner that displays or copies the full decoded text before opening the link. A camera prompt showing only a domain may not reveal the whole address.
- Compare that text with your intended URL. An unfamiliar redirect address is a reason to check its owner and terms, not proof of a bad service.
The final browser address is not enough: a redirect can end at the correct page while hiding the intermediate dependency. A static code made from a shortened URL still depends on that shortener. Prefer a page on a domain your business controls when that is practical.
Four options for different jobs
| Tool | Useful for | Scope to check |
|---|---|---|
| Pick QR Code | Static links, Wi-Fi, contacts, and events; PNG, SVG, and JPEG downloads; optional logo. | No account required. No editable redirect or customer scan dashboard. |
| Chrome | Sharing the page already open in your browser, with a QR download option. | Google's sharing guide describes page sharing, rather than a branded campaign editor. |
| Adobe Express | Static URL codes with colors and a logo; PNG, JPEG, and PDF output. | Its generator supports URLs; Adobe directs Wi-Fi and contact-code users to dedicated tools. |
| QRCode Monkey | Free static codes with logo and design controls; PNG and several vector formats. | Its separate professional service handles editability and scan statistics. SVG preserves the full custom design. |
These are options to shortlist, not a universal ranking. For the browser workflow, see our Google and Chrome QR code guide. For a direct link, follow the website QR code walkthrough.
Decide what "free" must include
- Can you create and download your chosen format before committing to an account?
- Are logo uploads, commercial use, or higher-resolution files included in the specific tool you are using?
- If you need a redirect, what are its scan limits, renewal terms, and behavior after a trial ends?
- Do you need scan counts, or is keeping the destination available the real requirement?
A provider can deliberately put an expiration date on a redirect; Bitly's expiration documentation shows one example. Check the exact feature and plan rather than assuming every free code expires or every dynamic code requires the same terms.
For a printed sign, check the export in your layout software and scan a finished proof. A logo adds another reason to test: use our logo QR code guide and printing checklist before ordering a batch.
Common questions
Do free QR codes expire?
A static QR image has no expiration timer. The encoded website, document, or shortened link can still become unavailable. For a dynamic code, check the redirect service terms and any expiration settings.
Can I change a static QR code after printing?
You cannot change the data in the printed pattern. You can update a page at the same URL, or manage a redirect you control. A different encoded address requires a new QR image.
Does Pick QR Code track customer scans?
No. Its generators create static codes and do not provide a customer scan dashboard. Choose a service with scan reporting if that information is necessary for your campaign.
