How to Create a QR Code for a Website, Step by Step
Turn a website link into a free QR code. Choose the right URL, download PNG or SVG, test access, and keep the destination working after printing.
A website QR code stores a web address in a pattern a camera can read. It does not store a copy of the website. Your visitor still needs internet access, and the destination still needs to work. Start with the page you want someone to reach after seeing your sign, card, or packaging.
1. Choose the page that matches the promise
If the sign says "Scan to book," use your booking page. If the insert says "Assembly instructions," use the instructions for that product. A homepage is fine when introducing a business; it adds an unnecessary step when someone needs one specific action.
Open that page on a phone first. Check the text, buttons, and any form. For a shared document or PDF, use the public viewing link and check its access settings. A QR code cannot remove a login requirement or make a private file public.
2. Paste the full URL into the generator
- Copy the address from the browser, including
https://and the page path. - Open the website link generator.
- Paste it into Website or page link. The preview appears when the address is valid.
- Scan the preview and confirm the destination before customizing it.
Use a stable address you control when possible. A short address such as https://example.com/book is easier to print as a fallback than a long session link. Keep parameters the page needs; remove optional ones only after checking that the shorter URL opens the same page.
Longer data can require a denser QR pattern, as DENSO WAVE's QR version guidance explains. An outside link shortener can shorten the pattern, but it also adds another service the printed code depends on.
3. Customize only what you need
Leave the default design for a straightforward code. To match a brand, open Customize the look and choose a dark code color on a light background. Keep the blank border clear of text and graphics. DENSO specifies a quiet zone four modules wide on every side.
If you want a center image, follow the QR code with logo guide. Adding a logo changes the scan test; a preview that looks attractive may still need a smaller logo or simpler pattern.
4. Download the actual file
Choose Download print-ready PNG for a 600 by 600 pixel image. Under Other file types, you can download SVG, PNG, or JPEG. SVG keeps the QR pattern sharp when scaled in a print layout. Use the print size calculator to check whether a raster file has enough pixels for your planned size.
Keep the original download rather than taking a screenshot. Add a clear instruction beside it, such as "Scan to book an appointment," plus a readable URL people can type.
5. Test the download and the finished print
Scan the downloaded image from another screen or print one proof. On iPhone, frame the code in Camera and tap the link that appears; Apple's scanning instructions show that workflow. Test with another phone when possible, then repeat from the final printed size and surface.
- No code detected: Check focus, lighting, contrast, and the clear border. Test the original file before changing the layout.
- Wrong page opens: Correct the address and generate a fresh code.
- Login or access error: Fix the destination's sharing settings. Redesigning the QR image will not fix permissions.
The QR printing guide covers glare, folds, and physical proof testing.
What happens if the website changes?
Pick QR Code's URL generator stores the address directly, with no provider redirect inserted. Updating the content at that same address does not require a new code. Changing the encoded address does: either print a replacement or keep the old address working through a redirect you control. MDN explains how redirects preserve old links.
The downloaded image has no subscription timer. A deleted page, expired domain, or broken redirect can still stop visitors reaching the content. For the tradeoffs, read how to choose a free QR code generator.
Common questions
Can I create a QR code for a website for free?
Yes. Pick QR Code lets you turn a website address into a static QR code and download it without an account. The linked website remains responsible for hosting and access.
Can I change the website after printing the QR code?
You can update the content at the encoded address. To use a different address, generate a new code or maintain a redirect from the old address on a domain you control.
Can a website QR code open a PDF or Google Form?
Yes, if you use a web link to the PDF or the form intended for respondents. Test the link while signed out and check the sharing permissions. The QR code does not host the file or bypass access restrictions.
